I had a writing assignment in college to sit in a public place and to write about what I observed. It was one of my favorite assignments to complete. I remember sitting outside of the music building noting behavior and action, and somehow with a little bit of physical detail, a story began to unfold. It wasn't the story of any individual. There was no conflict. It was more the story of the place in that moment.
Sitting on the bus today, I thought about this. Watching people get on and off, the way they sat and behaved, watching each other. The city full of randomness and interaction that most of us ignore or take for granted. My plan is to go to different places throughout Chicago, different neighborhoods with different types of people, and to spin simple observations into a web of coversation that we all have with this city every day.
